Kitchen Cabinets: Replace or Reface?

"Ready or not, here I come!"
Tommy yells as he uncovers his eyes and bounds around the house. The kitchen is a playground for the kids. And the cabinets are the perfect place for a game of hide and seek. Before you know it, pots and pans are overflowing out of a cabinet, the dog is scratching at the bottom cabinets, where Lucy is hiding, and Tommy is teetering on the countertop, trying to reach the handle of the top cabinet.

To say the least, your kitchen cabinets have seen better days.

But should you reface your cabinets or replace them altogether?

Refacing

Refacing is a basically a facelift for your cabinets. It involves the installation of new drawer faces and doors as well as veneering the cabinet boxes. New cabinet fixtures can be installed as well. You should reface your cabinets if you like your current kitchen layout, the boxes aren’t damaged or if you are on a strict budget.

Replace

Cabinet replacement is a good decision for those who have cabinets that are beyond repair or those who want an entirely refreshed look. Your existing cabinets will be removed. Then our experienced installers will set and precisely level your base cabinets. This is essential so your counters aren’t uneven. Accurate leveling is also important because improperly leveled bases may result in counters cracking in the future. The wall cabinets will be hung. The hardware, doors, and drawers will also be installed.

Cost

Cabinet doors and drawers are 70% of the cost of a cabinet. The cabinet box (usually made of plywood) is the least expensive part of replacing cabinets. The trim work, finish, and selected wood type on the drawers and doors are the main expense of a cabinet project. This means that refacing cabinets would be more than half of the potential cost of a cabinet replacement project.

Timeline

It takes about 6-8 weeks to receive cabinets, 2-4 days to reface cabinets and 1-2 days to replace them.

What do we recommend?

If your budget allows it, installing new cabinets is a long-lasting and valuable investment for your home as well as your family.
